Memories of Dave-
16

You can help Kim by giving what you can. $1000, $100, or $1- it all helps. Dave's family will appreciate it more than you can know.

THANK YOU!

Sadly, our friend and inspiration, Dave Panella, lost his long struggle with cancer at approximately 12:00 November 13, 2005. He passed peacefully in his sleep with his loving wife at his side. Please say a prayer for Dave and also one for Kim, Thomas, Ryan, and all those that continue to love him.

Dave's friends have adopted a section of road in Dave's honor. What more fitting tribute could there be than to have a some of the roads Dave loved to ride maintained so that others can ride and perhaps feel a bit of the passion for cycling that Dave did?

At the request of the Panella Family, Andrew VanKuren's moving eulogy of Dave Panella is now posted on davepanella.org.

Post your favourite memories of Dave Panella

Friends and family were able to pay their final respects to Dave Panella today. The funeral took place on a glorious, crisp November day- a perfect day for a bike ride and, hopefully, Dave was out there tearing up the roads with legs that will never get tired or sore again.

Grief and mourning are a part of losing someone we cherish but there is also a celebration of a life well-lived. In the spirit of keeping Dave's message alive, a new section has been added to the web site. To anyone who had the fortune to meet Dave: please tell us a story of Dave and his life. Whether that memory be happy or sad, uplifting or heartbreaking, joyous or melencholy, it is important that it be told. Everyone who knew him agrees that Dave's was a life of special significance and import, so let's tell his story now that he is no longer here to tell it himself.

Shelly and Andrew said it best at the funeral today, "Thanks for being you, Dave."

Click on the "memories" button above and post your memories of Dave. If you have more than one, please feel free to tell us as many of your memories of Dave as you like.

News

Dave finally realized a dream and met his cycling idol, 7-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong at the 2005 edition of the Ride for the Roses in Austin, Texas, USA. Read Update #85 on the "Dave's Updates" page for his version and visit the gallery for some pictures! Tailwinds....

On October 2nd of 2000, Dave Panella's life changed when he received some of the worst news anyone can ever hear- he was told that he had colon cancer. Dave was diagnosed with colon cancer on the same day of the year as one of his heros, Lance Armstrong. Another blow came in April of 2003 when Dave was told he also had pancreatic cancer.

Many people would fold under the pressure and give in to despair after hearing news like that. Not Dave. Dave met this news with hope and determination to overcome this biggest challenge of his life. With the steadfast support of his loving wife, Dave is still fighting the good fight even though his road has been a rocky one at times.

Dave began sending updates to his local cycling club's e-mail list to let his friends and fellow riders know how he was doing and about any significant changes in his situtation. These e-mail updates are the reason this website was created. Dave's courage, fighting spirit, unflagging optimism, and good cheer in the face of his illness have been an inspiration for many across the central NY cycling community who received these e-mail messages. The hope is that they can now be an inspiration for many others in a much wider audience through this site.

Dave's e-mail updates can be viewed on the "Dave's Updates" page exactly as they were originally written. No editing of any kind has been done to them. Future updates will be added as Dave writes them.

Please sign the guestbook to show your support for Dave and his continuing fight. It might not seem like much, but as more people sign the book Dave can know that he has a lot of people pulling for him.

Perhaps the best measure of the kind of person Dave is is this guestbook entry-

Hey Dad - You have inspired me so much. I could never have had a better dad in the whole wide world. You are such an inspiration to so many people. I am the luckiest person to have you as a dad. Love, Thomas
